Douglas Fir

Premium quality Distribution head office is located in the Province of British Columbia with access to the world Largest Douglas fir markets, with over 30 mills regularly processing either mixed grain or edge grain Douglas fir all Premium Quality's Douglas fir is kiln dried to less than 10% moisture content best for the re-manufacturing process value add lumber and valued add lumber product made from Douglas fir are now found around the world and Throughout North America.

Million Acres of Douglas Fir managed primarily in natural stands. Although production is much greater in Douglas Fir, the two species account for more than 45 percent of all Western softwood produced annually. Each year, more than 1.5 billion tree seedlings are planted in the U.S. and billions more in Canada -- some five new trees for each American. Nationally, annual forest growth has continually exceeded harvest since the 1940,s. In the West, forest growth exceeds harvest by 35 percent or more each year with similar practices in Canada.

Douglas Fir lumber products are identified by region. Products from trees growing west of the Cascade Crest to the Pacific Ocean, the most abundant region for Douglas Fir, are simply identified as "DF" on the grade stamp. East of the Cascades, Western Larch grows intermixed with Douglas Fir. The two species are often kept separate in appearance grade products but are combined in Dimension products and marketed as "DF-L". Because Douglas Fir and Western Larch share nearly identical structural characteristics and physical working properties, the two species are interchangeable in Dimension products.  Douglas Fir grown in Canada is identified as Douglas Fir North or "D Fir (N)" as shown on the grade stamp "DFN"

Premium Quality Distribution Ltd use's the following gradestamped National Grade Rule (NGR) Dimension lumber this is recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation (formerly Ministry of Construction) for use in wood-frame construction.

As wood loses or gains moisture, it will shrink or swell until it reaches equilibrium with the constantly changing level of moisture in the air of its immediate environment. All lumber benefits from some degree of "seasoning," i.e. letting it adjust to the humidity conditions of its surrounding atmosphere before it is installed. Because of its cell structure, wood shrinks primarily in width and thickness and very little in length.

Douglas Fir is unique among all softwood species in that it is naturally dimensionally stable, having the ability to season well in position. Many builders prefer to cut, nail and fasten Douglas Fir in the "green" or unseasoned condition, allowing it to air dry during construction. As a result, coastal Douglas Fir structural lumber is often shipped unseasoned (indicated by S-GRN on the grade stamp). Framing lumber 2 inches and less (nominal size) in thickness can be shipped after seasoning to a moisture content of 19 percent or less, which is indicated by S-DRY, KD or KD-HT on the grade stamp. S-DRY can mean kiln dried or air seasoned, while KD and KD-HT specifically mean kiln dried. Regional market conditions and building trade preferences dictate local availability of dry or green products.

For millwork, remanufacturing applications or glued products, Douglas Fir is dried in temperature and humidity-controlled kilns or stacked and air dried until its moisture content (MC) reaches the desired level for an intended purpose.

The term "DRY" can be confusing in lumber terminology. In structural grades, "DRY" indicates a product was either kiln- or air-dried to a 19 percent or less moisture content level prior to surfacing. However, in appearance products (e.g. the FINISH and SELECT grades), "DRY" is defined in the Western Lumber Grading Rules as being a maximum of 15 percent MC and in these grades, 85 percent of the items will be shipped with a MC level of 12 percent or less.

Premium Quality's grade stamp assures conformance of the graded piece with its applicable and in accordance of the Western Lumber Grading Rules, and also to the West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau's (WCLIB) West Coast Lumber Standard Grading Rules, the Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau's Export R List Rules, the National Lumber Grading Authority's (NLGA) Standard Grading Rules for Canadian Lumber , the Redwood Inspection Service's (RIS) Standard Specifications for Grades of California Lumber and the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau's (SPIB) NGR and Scaffold Plank portion of the Standard Grading Rules for Southern Pine Lumber . These rules provide lumber users with a dependable measure for determining the quality and uniformity of lumber as well as its performance capabilities.  e-mail Premium Quality for more information sales@premiumquality.net

Edge Grain Fir

Edge grain fir used by custom door manufactures to cabinet makers edge grain fir is one of the most attractive fine grain woods asked about in north America.   Premium Quality supplies some of the fines grain edge grain fir in the World with as many as 30 growth rings per inch.

When it come to edge grain fir designers appreciate the rich visual quality of edge grain douglas fir and enjoy its beautiful response to fine craftsmanship and finishing. When quarter sawn to expose its vertical grain, edge grain douglas fir is particularly attractive. Substantial volumes of clear and nearly clear timber products are available in edge grain douglas fir from the long-rotation commercial timberlands of the western region of Canada .

Appearance-grade products range from the exquisitely beautiful to the most utilitarian. Color, grain pattern, texture, knot size, type and quantity, as well as quality of manufacturing are all key factors in determining grade with allowable characteristics defined for each grade. Moisture content levels are carefully controlled in the highest grades to ensure products will meet the strict dimensional stability requirements of finish carpenters, furniture manufacturers and cabinetmakers.

Edge grain douglas fir's light rosey color, which darkens over time when exposed to UV rays, is set off by its remarkably straight grain pattern. The tough fiber holds fasteners well and it machines to an exceptionally smooth, glossy surface. When dry, edge grain douglas fir retains its shape and size without shrinking, swelling, cupping, warping, bowing or twisting, and generally won't check or show a raised grain. Such characteristics make edge grain douglas fir ideal for all types of trim and joinery applications: fascia, doors, millwork, window and door casings, mantels, stairs and baseboards. Products may be run-to-pattern. Douglas fir's handsome appearance is clearly visible in solid plank paneling and edge-glued veneers. In many cases, the grade of panelling products reflects the grade of the starting board material, adhering to similar restrictions for allowable characteristics. For best finishing results clear coatings, transparent lacquer, varnishes, oils, wax, bright or subdued stains, tints or paints and enamels are all appropriate finishes for edge grain fir products

Hemlock

Pacific Coast Hemlock is the commercial designation given to one of British Columbia's most abundant species: Western Hemlock. The quality of abundance is one which manufacturers will value increasingly in the future. since Pacific Coast Hemlock comprise some 60 percent of British Columbia's coastal forest resources, continued supply in a wide range of grades and dimensions is assured.

In Canada, the United States and international markets, Pacific Coast Hemlock is finding increasing favor as a viable alternative to hardwood and other softwoods in the production of quality millwork and joinery. Introduce Pacific Coast Hemlock into your production line soon. For ease and speed of production of the, highest quality millwork and joinery, it could be the most profitable decision you'll ever make. If you have any further question e-mail or call US

Of the West's approximately 136 million acres of forested land, there are nearly 40 million acres of commercial timberland* and nearly 50 million acres of forested land, including some 13 million acres of designated "old growth," permanently set aside in parks, scenic reserves, wilderness areas, habitat reserves and research areas -- forever protected from harvesting. In addition, as of 1996, more than 80 percent of the forested area in the region's National Forests has been withdrawn from timber harvesting due to legislative, administrative, or judicial actions as even more progressive ecosystem management plans are implemented.

In the Western Woods region, the 12 contiguous Western states plus Alaska, there are approximately 20 commercially important species well suited to softwood lumber production. While each has unique characteristics, physical and mechanical working properties, making it appropriate for specific applications, these Western softwood species are grouped into six primary combinations. These combinations simplify production, inventories and distribution, and facilitate engineering and product specification for design.

Hem-Fir is a species combination of Western Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) and five of the True Firs: California Red Fir (Abies magnifica), Grand Fir (Abies grandis), Noble Fir (Abies procera), Pacific Silver Fir (Abies amabilis), and White Fir (Abies concolor). While Western Hemlock and the True Firs are sometimes marketed separately in products graded for appearance, these species share similar design values making products graded for structural applications interchangeable.

The Hem-Fir species combination is one of the most important in the Western region, second only to the Douglas Fir-Larch species group in terms of abundance, production volumes, strength, and versatility in end use.

Since Hem-Fir framing lumber products are nearly as strong as Douglas Fir-Larch, they can meet many of the structural load-bearing and load-carrying requirements of residential, light commercial and heavy construction. With their good strength and stiffness properties, S-DRY and KD Hem-Fir structural-grade products are well suited to framing systems where solid-sawn, structural lumber is needed for immediate use in an assembly of other dry framing products (I-beams, structural-glued finger-jointed lumber, stress-rated boards, etc.). Dry Hem-Fir framing products are subject to minimal shrinkage and checking, and thus perform extremely well in hot, dry climates, or in cold, low-humidity climates, and in multistory framing.

Recently, in some regions of the U.S., end users have experienced "bouncy" floors when imported species have been used to their maximum allowable published spans. In contrast, published design values for all U.S. species combinations have proven reliable in end use and U.S. species perform well to published allowable maximum spans. Hem-Fir's modulus of elasticity (MOE or E) value, a stiffness factor in floor systems, exceeds all other Western species combinations except Douglas Fir-Larch, the species combination which is held as the standard against which all other framing lumber is measured worldwide. It is the combination of stiffness (MOE value) and strength (Fb value) that yields a satisfactory floor system.

Hem-Fir is additionally preferred by many builders because of its: resistance to splitting in nailing and screwing; ability to hold nails and screws securely; ease of sawing without splintering; ability to hold a variety of glues and adhesives; and moderate lightness in weight. It is straight grained, stiff, strong, easy to work and relatively free from pitch.

Dimension Lumber: The bulk of S-DRY and KD Hem-Fir is produced in Dimension lumber sizes (2" to 4" thick by 2" and wider). Dimension lumber Hem-Fir products include: Structural Light Framing grades fit applications where high design values are needed in light-framing sizes for engineered applications, trusses, laminated products and multistory projects. (grades include SELECT STRUCTURAL, NO. 1&BTR, NO. 1, NO. 2, and NO. 3.) These grades may be a special order for some retail lumber suppliers. Light Framing grades are intended for general framing applications such as wall framing, plates, sills, cripples, blocking, etc. (CONSTRUCTION, STANDARD, and UTILITY). STUD grade is intended for vertical installations in wall systems and other applications including blocking and furring. Structural Joists & Planks, in 2x5 through 4x18 sizes (with the majority of production in 2x6 through 4x12), are available in SELECT STRUCTURAL, NO. 1&BTR J&P, NO. 1, NO. 2 and NO. 3 to fit engineered applications where larger-sized members are required. Special Dimension: Hem-Fir products in this category include Machine Stress-Rated (MSR) lumber for components manufacturing and engineered applications, and structural-glued (end- or finger jointed) products, which are recognized by U.S. building codes as interchangeable with solid-sawn lumber products of the same grade, species and intended end use.

One quarter of the lumber used in components and truss manufacturing is MSR lumber. Hem-Fir MSR products are commonly available in several stress levels, occasionally up to 2400 Fb-2.0E. These MSR products offer good strength-to-weight properties, recognized plate-holding ability, exceptional stiffness and consistent availability in a variety of lengths, widths and grades. for more information e-mail US sales@premiumquality.net
